bicycle accommodations...

Staunton will soon finish the widening of Churchville Ave from Augusta Street to Albemarle Street. This project will widen this stretch of road from 2 lanes to 3 with a center turn lane and is the main thoroughfare between Gypsy Hill Park and downtown Staunton. VDOT will be applying for federal funding to pay for this project. This project has been in the planning stages for a number of years. The project was moving forward, they buried the conduits for utilities and cleared land for the widening. Then, from what I read/heard, the bids that came in to complete the project were way over budget so the project has languished. Unfortunately, when this project was scoped, bicycle accommodations were not part of the plan. Since that time, VDOT has changed its guidelines and bicycle accommodations have to be recognized. With this new push to acquire funding, the project has to have a new environmental review. The comment period ended last Friday (7/18) but you can still send in an email. I didn't hear about the comment period myself until last Thursday and I did get an email in on Friday.
